Hi there. I just got a Dodge Ram 5. A few days ago I went to snoqualmie and when I wanted to get on freeway I pushed it a lil hard and the check engine light came on and flashing and then went off, felt that I lost some power too.
On the way home same problem happened when I was trying to passed another vehicle. Since then when I try to push it harder, I mean the rpm goes overthe check engine light comes on and flashing and runs rough and car feels like it has no power.
The code that appeared on the scaner was p which said a misfire on cylinder 1. I changed the spurs plugs and put a new coil from oreily and still misfire on cylinder 1. Any suggestions about this issue?5.7L Hemi misfire / \
Thank you. There are cases where the computer will even reduce power output in order to protect the engine and components, this may be the cause of your noticeable loss in power and performance when the light is on If the light stops flashing after a brief period that is a good sign that the engine is only having the issue under heavy loads, and is probably related to the cylinder 1 misfire. A cylinder specific misfire can be caused by a variety of issues.
If you have already the cylinder 1 coil and spark plug then the next thing I would look at is the injector. If the cylinder 1 injector malfunctions or gets clogged it may not be able to provide the correct amount of fuel, resulting in a misfire.
A vacuum leak can also cause a misfire if a vacuum hose or intake gasket allow unmetered air into the engine. I would recommend having a professional technician, such as one from YourMechanic, come to your location to diagnose the cause of your cylinder specific misfire.Gennaio 8, 2001

This started after my last oil change.P is a fairly common trouble code with the Dodge Ram. P is certainly a cause for concern, and should be considered a threat to the drivability your Ram.
It will often be accompanied by codes P, PPP etc…. Fixing P should be considered a high priority. The engine is also not firing all of the fuel, so raw fuel is also passing through Cylinder 5 into the exhaust.
Mileage may suffer as well when your Ram has P as well. P is a cylinder specific misfire code, which means that Cylinder 5 is misfiring and causing it.
There are quite a few things that can cause the P trouble code to trigger the Dodge Ram.Bismarck nd drug bust
Here are the most common problems that may cause it. They are presented somewhat in order from most to least likely to be causing the code:. If you follow the items listed above you should be able to fix the P Inspect and test the parts of the ignition system around the cylinder to determine whether or not you need to replace the coil packs, plugs, or wires.
Most of the time one of those three things will end up being the problem. You need to reset the trouble codes and swap the coil pack, wire, and plug from Cylinder 5 to another cylinder.
After that, Go ahead and replace them or have them tested. After that you would want to test the fuel injection system. P is cause for concern and left unfixed can leave you stranded or make the vehicle virtually un-drivable. Fixing the problem causing the code to fire can save you time and money and keep your Dodge Ram from breaking down.
Quick action may also save your catalytic converter from going bad. Good luck diagnosing the issue. Our certified mobile mechanics can come to your home or office to perform the Check Engine Light is on diagnostic inspection. Removes cylinder 5 ignition coil or plug wire and checks for evidence of spark tracking on outside of coil or plug boot. Also looks for oil contamination from a leaking valve cover. Removes and checks the cylinder spark plug and replaces or switches to a different cylinder to see if misfire moves to the other cylinder.
Not switching the coil to a different cylinder and rescanning to see if the misfire moves to another cylinder to check if it is the coil that is bad. A misfiring cylinder can cause the engine to run excessively rich and can damage the catalyst. The misfire will cause the engine to run rough and hesitate on acceleration resulting in decreased performance and fuel economy.
Replacing the faulty spark plug or replacing all spark plugs as a set if failure was due to a worn out plug. Code P is triggered when the crankshaft sensor does not get an acceleration of the crankshaft from cylinder number 5 power stroke indicating the cylinder is not contributing to engine power. In plain English, a misfire condition, means that the engine in your Dodge pick up, van, or SUV is not running on all cylinders. When this happens, whether you have a 3.
Lifter And Cam Issue
Although it sucks that your Dodge pick up or van, SUV is misfiring, the cool thing is that troubleshooting the misfire is not that hard to do. Let's find out more. What helps, to successfully diagnose a misfire code or misfire condition is to know some of the root causes of a misfire. Well, because quite a few things can cause and engine to misfire. Now don't worry, I won't go into a lot of technical detail, just the stuff you and I need to know to troubleshoot the misfire issue.
The most important thing you need to know is that each cylinder needs three things to produce power and they are: air, fuel, and spark.
And when your Dodge vehicle is misfiring, it's because one of them is missing from the equation. OK, let's go into more detail:. Ignition System: The ignition system is responsible for the production and delivery of spark. Fuel System: The fuel system is responsible for the delivery of fuel. If fuel is missing from any one specific engine cylinder, it will misfire. The most common type of failure is a fuel injector going on permanent vacation.
Engine Mechanical Condition: The pistons and valves are the ones that draw air into the engine. Sometimes you'll have one cylinder or several whose pistons or valves have accelerated wear and tear. This causes those cylinders to produce a less than average compression value that will cause a misfire condition. Another thing that will cause a misfire normally at idle is vacuum leaks coming from a large vacuum hose or the intake manifold gasket.

Add Complaint. On March 5, while driving to work, I heard a knocking sound from the engine.
Cylinder 8 misfire
Later in the day when driving, the truck would lose power when I accelerated. I called a doge dealership and made an appointment with the service department early the next morning.
The next morning, the sound was louder and had less power through acceleration when driving to the dealership. I agreed to have a diagnostic and was later called and told my fuel pump needed to be replaced. When I drove home, the truck stalled out once but I managed to make it home. I had several mechanics including one that worked at a different Dodge dealership listen to the knocking and each mechanic immediately suspected a problem with the lifters. Also, according to each mechanic, this was a common problem with doge Ram truck.
I towed the truck to a mechanic and found that the 5th cylinder lifter had froze up and carved a groove into the cam.
The mechanic has order the lifters and parts to repair the engine and found a backlog of orders for the same parts. I'm currently having to rent a car. My work requires me to sometimes drive on the highway miles round trip.

A smoothly running engine is often taken for granted until a problem comes to light and the operator is left to diagnose the problem. A misfire is often chalked up to ignition timing when, in fact, there are a number of reasons the engine could be running rough.
If you find yourself in the unfortunate position of having a misfire in your Dodge Ram, understand that there are many reasons your vehicle might be acting up. The first process that must be investigated when a misfire is detected is the ignition system. This consists of the timing, distributor, coil, spark plugs, plug wires and electrical components, including the charging system.
As these components begin to fail, the initial misfire will be very slight and difficult to detect. As the components deteriorate into a more advanced case of ill repair, the problem will become more noticeable. Left unattended, this can lead to complete failure, and the vehicle will cease to operate completely.
Popping noises back through the intake manifold, severe surging and jerking accompanied by a rough idle and poor acceleration are all signs of an ignition problem. Periodic inspection of the ignition system is recommended to prevent such ignition difficulty. Check the spark plug wires for damage and ensure that they are on the spark plugs tightly.
If your vehicle is distributor equipped, you should also check the rotor for damage and wear. Check the timing itself with a timing light to ensure it is within specification. Another common reason and typically missed diagnosis for a rough running engine is the lean misfire.
In this case, the engine is receiving too much air and not enough fuel. This is most noticeable while the engine is resting at idle since this is when an engine typically requires more fuel to operate smoothly. The lean misfire condition is likely to disappear at highway speeds due to the more efficient flow into the combustion chambers.
Some of the causes for a lean condition are EGR valves that are stuck in the open position, leaking intake manifold gaskets, faulty mass air flow sensors if your vehicle is so equipped and plugged fuel filters and bad fuel pumps. Vacuum leaks are also the culprits for some lean conditions in an engine. A close inspection of your rubber vacuum tubing as well as periodic changes of your fuel filter and cleaning of your fuel injectors are invaluable in staying ahead of any fuel-related problems with your vehicle.
Once again, it is much better and in most cases more cost-effective to be proactive as opposed to reactive in the maintenance department. Perhaps the most costly misfire malfunction to correct is the mechanical misfire. Bad head gaskets, worn piston rings, bad valves and worn cylinder walls are all culprits.
Damaged or broken rocker arms, broken valve springs, and worn camshaft lobes or lifters are also reasons for mechanical misfiring. Most of these failures will be accompanied by some form of internal engine noise. A worn timing chain will often rattle as it slaps the timing cover, and a broken rocker arm will sound like a big piece of metal is rattling around inside the top of your engine.
Other failures such as a broken valve spring may make no noise at all other than the engine popping and pinging. These mechanical failures are often heard as a more consistent noise and will in most cases increase in relative equality with vehicle engine speed. This article was written by the It Still Works team, copy edited and fact checked through a multi-point auditing system, in efforts to ensure our readers only receive the best information.Engine requires a partial teardown to determine how severe the camshaft and lifter failure is.
It started out as a blinking check engine light, with a misfire in cylinder number 3. Atmiles approx, my engine had a catastrophic lifter failure on cyl 5.
My last oil change was 3 weeks ago, and less than 1k miles ago, in which everything was running smoothly. May 6,the lifter completely failed, thus leading to cam damage and needing a completely new engine. There was no tick until it was too late. I have stayed on top of maintenance, never worked her hard, or so much as floored it, neither had the previous owner. I bought her used last fall, and she was in tip top, near perfect condition until last Weds when this part seized up and wrecked my engine.
All the other lifters are in great condition as well, which I believe makes me able to contact RAM directly about this issue. Can't believe how many people have problems with the cam and lifters. Dodge should be responsible for the repairs There is also electrical problems!!
Wont never buy another one and we also had a warranty, but because we didnt give them our nee address, they got of paying for it!!!!! Its bull the money we pay for these trucks,I've also had trouble with lights going in and out. Lifters and cam failed with less thenmiles. Started ticking at 20, and dealership said "it's the hemi tick" and "its ok" as soon as the Warranty ended it started shaking bad and threw a p error code.
YouTube is filled with even dodge mechanics saying they have a pile of cam shafts sheared off by bad lifters Somebody call a lawyer. I have babied my Dodge Ram 2WD truck with 76, miles, never pulling a heavy load, changing the oil regularly with a high quality full synthetic oil and this is what I get to show for it The lifter for that lobe was also completely seized up.
I have never heard of anyone ever having to have these major repairs completed on any vehicle with these few of miles. I truly believe that Ram has been aware of this defect of poor quality parts for quite some time and really needs to step up and pay for the repair.
Why would anyone buy a Ram truck when you can not trust the quality of the motor??? This is one of the most important parts of the vehicle!
Does anyone know of a Class Action lawsuit to join about this defect problem? How about where or who to call at FCA about trying to get reimbursed for this repair? This exact issue just happened to my Ram After some research, found many other owners had the issue with 3 cylinder. Then came across someone who has a complaint and it's 5 on my truck too. I have taken extremely good care and maintenance on the truck. Bought new and only have less then K on it. Also would love to see Dodge pay for the repairs.
It's My second new Ram I'm not sure this message counts towards signing any complaints, but I certainly would love to sign any complaints on this issue that Dodge Ram should be rectifying!!!! Common problem after researched. Car engine light, cylinder three misfire.
