Or you can do it the slower way and using your handy dandy new fangled multi-meter to check each and every copper section for continuity and if they are shorted to other copper sections. If it passes all those tests Then you need a lathe assuming the generator has been run for awhile. Normally the brushes wear "Tracks" in the armature and using the lathe you turn down the small end of the armature where the brushes were running until it is true for it's entire length. Now the fun part IF you have a real steady hand it is possible to use a section of hacksaw in one of those handles that slip over the blade and only leave a short section hanging out but you will need to work slowly or the blade will also cut the copper which you do not want to happen.
Next physically check the wire wrapping or lacquer on the exposed coil fields wires making sure the wires aren't close to coming into contact where they shouldn't Now that the hard part is out of the way it's the same as any other rebuild like finding new brushes, tension springs, and bearings and putting them in. Or you can save yourself some work and send it out depends on how much you love to DIY and how much free time you have.
After you get it rebuilt either way don't forget to "flash your fields" before running the engine. On the other hand, there's plenty of replacement units on the market which cost about the same as rebuilding your old one. Mike51MercApr 9, Both previous posts are viable.
Starter Parts and Rebuild Kits
I myself would take the generator to a "good" automotive electrical shop and have it "dressed up" and tested. That way you have a generator with a warranty. But don't forget to put a new regulator and polarize it.
If you have someone rebuild it, make sure of the conditional warranty. It may stipulate having a new regulator, polarizing the generator, and even the possibility of a qualified automotive electrical technician installing in the car. Is your generator working now???
If so you can probably refresh it new brushes and new bushings. I did my 6 v with new brushes and bearing bushings about 5 years ago andits still working fine. The bushings wear uneven due to the pressure the fan belt exerts. Same with starters.Tractor Restoration - Generator Rebuild Part 1
The bushing wear, and allow the armeture to drag on the field coils slowing the rotation of the starter. This thread contains simple and advanced testing, including old school dangerous tests. When it is all over, you will need to polarize, and many people are going to give you the Delco method, which does not work on Ford syste, and repeatedly insist it is correct!
This thread covers polarization, Ford and GM, and look at all the people in it insisting that the GM instructions are right for Fords! The two systems are grounded differently, and what's sauce for the goose is gonna fry the gander. Bruce LancasterApr 9, On any Ford system, make sure you have or add a wire from ground terminal on gen right to base plate of regulator.Your starter generator will either use a bearing and a bushing, or 2 sealed bearings.Bala mantra quora
Either way this kit has what you need. I watched a video of the rebuild process us the kit from isavetractors. I ordered the re-build kit for my starter generator and the parts fit perfectly. Parts arrived promptly in a secure package. Parts fit perfectly.
I blew all the old dust out of the unit, polished the surfaces needing it and had it back together in less than an hour. Runs like a brand new unit and starts my old Cub Cadet with no problem. It was ez and high quality. The YouTube video was very helpful.
This kit works amazing. I had issues getting the old bearings to come out of the housings but other than that it went as planned. Just follow the video Norman made and it should make sense. Great quality product and shipping was fast. The first one I ordered got lost in the mail and Norman and his team were very quick to correct the issue and sent out another.
Great customer service from a great company. I will definitely be buying more from them. Rating Required Select Rating 1 star worst 2 stars 3 stars average 4 stars 5 stars best. Email Required. Review Subject Required.

John Deere 6 Volt Delco Generator (1101859) Repair Kit
First, Let's get familar with some of the components as shown here. Remove cover band so you can get to the rear cover plate Brush Leads. Special thanks to Harley Padilla who has the knowledge and equipment to make this article possible.
Remove the rear cover plate long bolts. These might be a little tight, but usually will break free with your torque of a large screw driver. Remove the center screw from the end of the commutator end cover plate. Note: the cover plate is still connected via wiring on the inside, so don't try and pull it off yet. Next, we want to disconnect the brushes. Find a hook type device that will allow you to pull back the brush springs as shown here. Next, remove the brushes by pulling back the brush springs, and lightly tugging on the brushes.
You have to open up the brush spring covers in order to easily pop the brushes out. With the brushes disconntected, carefully open the faceplate so you can see the terminal connections inside the core casing.Rmarkdown beamer template
Disconnect the terminals from the casing. There are three connections that you will need to disconnect, so take your time and carefully disconnect each of them as the wires are brittle.
The terminals are a little difficult to get to, but you can hold one side with needle nose pliers and the other use a socket to remove the terminal nuts. Pop the terminals through to the inside. With the terminals and ground disconnected and the brushes out from their springs the cover plate is ready to come off.
Now move the front part of the generator housing. Remove Shaft nut, Plain washer, and Lock washer. To get the field coils out, we need to use an impact wrench with a slotted end. These are very stubborn to remove. With the field coils two screws removed from the housing, gentley remove the field coils by pulling them out. Note: they are connected together. Be careful not to break the connection when pulling the field coils out.
The field coils have a couple of heavy metal plates that are in the center of the field coils. You want to push those out of the center area and clean them up. Field Coils many times rebuilders ignore the field coils. After 60 years, its time for a fresh cloth taping.

The kit also includes a ground wire for the regulator. Notes about this regulator: For the 6-volt Positive ground application, you must wire the alternator like the one shown above in the second picture. Note the three screws that hold the brush holder assembly and voltage regulator, all three are insulated.
After you have installed the positive ground rectifier, you must wire the alternator using the green jumper shown above. The voltage regulator in these positive ground alternators are still negative ground. The only component that makes the alternator positive ground is the rectifier. The green jumper wire is connected between the negative "Bat" stud on the rectifier to the ground screw for the voltage regulator. The ring terminal on the red wire must contact the ground clip on the brush holder but be insulated from the screw.
Once the alternator is complete and installed on the vehicle you may need to excite the alternator for the first time. With the motor running, you momentarily touch the jumper from the case to the 1 terminal, then alternator should start charging.
6 volt Alternator Conversion/Repair kits
After you have run the vehicle for a bit at above idle speed the voltage should build to around 7. Once you excited the alternator, you should be able to turn the motor off then restart and rev the motor and the alternator will start charging.
